There are a few different types of Tractor Unit axle configurations, all suited to different purposes. The ones we are looking at here are the three most common types of axle configurations used in the UK.
6×2
6 wheels, 2-wheel drive.
Midlift
On a Midlift truck the front axle is a steering axle, the rear axle is a drive axle, and the middle axle is a helper or lift axle. When driving without a trailer or load, you can lift the middle axle to reduce wear and tear. You can then lower the middle helper axle to help pull the weight of the load. This type of truck is perfect for mid to long distance haulage on tarmac roads and light off road tracks.
Tag Axle or Real Lift
On a Tag Axle truck the front axle is a steering axle, the middle axle is a drive axle, and the rear axle is a helper or lift axle. On a tag axle, the wheelbase is shorter than on a midlift, allowing for a shorter turning circle and increased manoeuvrability. Not only this, but the offroad traction is increased due to the weight of the load concentrating more on the middle (drive) axle where all the traction is.
Some things to be aware of when purchasing a Rear Lift tractor unit: The gap between the 5th wheel and the rear of the truck is usually larger than on a Midlift so you will have to make sure your trailer has enough space to couple with the truck. Also, they are less stable than Midlifts due to the shorter wheelbase.
For these reasons, unless you need the better manoeuvrability or offroad traction, you might be better off with a Midlift.
6×4
6 wheels, 4-wheel drive.
Double Diff or Double Drive
On a Double Diff truck the front axle is a steering axle, and both rear axles are drive axles. This is great for abnormally heavy loads or driving on rough offroad terrain.
