The 6×2 is undoubtedly the most popular tractor unit specification in the UK. While these 3-axle tractors can legally run at 44 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW) on UK roads, many have a higher design weight of over 50 tonnes GVW.
Most common 6×2 tractor configuration is the mid-lift or twin-steer, where the second axle either lifts, steers or both. Another popular option is the tag-axle tractor unit, where the second axle is the drive-axle, and the third axle lifts. Tag-axle tractor units are growing in popularity, and are favoured by many operators due to their superior manoeuvrability and traction when the rear axle is lifted.
