Anyone who drives a truck for a living will know that they probably spend more time with their vehicle than they do with their families. This is why it is important to make a few upgrades to your used truck to ensure that it is comfortable and entertaining, as well as keeping your journeys quick, safe and easy.
This is our guide to some of the best ways for you to easily upgrade your used truck.
Whilst many in newer models of or truck will come with a sat nav system built in, many older models do not have this. Whilst many drivers might feel comfortable that they know the roads of the UK like the back of their hands, their knowledge still won’t alert them to a new set of roadworks or an unexpected traffic jam. Installing a portable sat nav system can be an incredibly effective way of ensuring you get from one place to another as quickly and efficiently as possible. It not only helps you find the best route but can also alert you to any delays and help you to find an alternative path.
A dash cam is an important feature for many drivers, but this is particularly the case for those in charge for truck. It can help to provide a clear image both in front of and behind vehicle that can assist in driving in misty conditions and also record any incidents that might occur. This can make it much easier for the police and employers to see who was at fault and can sometimes help in reducing insurance costs.
Whilst these can’t really be fitted to your truck, they can be fitted to you. Driving in the sun can be very dangerous, especially on those spring and autumn days where the sun is particularly low. Polarised sunglasses are particularly useful as they have special lenses that will help to reduce glare from any reflective surfaces like roads, snow and water. This makes driving much easier and can result in clearer vision, reduced eye strain and enhanced colour perception.
As you spend a lot of time in the driving seat, it is important that you are comfortable. Brand new seats are designed to mould to your body, but in a used truck, they are likely to have lost some of their support. It can therefore be a good idea to invest in a gel foam seat cushion to provide a bit of extra padding.
For those who suffer from back problems then a lumber cushion could also be a good option. This will attach around the back of the driver’s seat and provide a contoured design that gives additional support to your back.
You are likely to have a range of different devices in your truck including your phone and your sat nav, so you need to ensure that they are always fully charged. If your used truck does not have its own charging capabilities, then it can be a good idea to buy a portable plug-in charger instead. These can often allow you to charge more than one device at a time while you are on the move and can ensure that your sat nav continues working until you get to your destination. It can also be a good idea to have mounts that allow you to attach your phone or sat nav to the air vents of your cab wirelessly.
If your journeys involve an overnight stay, then it is important to get a good night’s sleep. It is important to invest in good bed linen, pillows and blankets that can help you to be comfortable in the back of your cab. You should be able to change these according to the temperatures, so that you can get plenty of rest and feel refreshed when you are back on the road.
Trucks are put through a lot of wear and tear, and this can start to show on the interior quite quickly. Investing in some good quality floor mats can help to make the inside of your cab look fresh and you and can also provide some good levels of protection against moisture, mould, dirt and debris as you get in and out of truck.
Whatever the length of your journey, a cup of tea or coffee can help to make it a little bit more bearable, especially on a cold morning. A travel mug is therefore an essential component of your cab. This can help to ensure that the hot liquid stays inside the mug and does not spill, whilst the thermal layers around the outside will keep the drink warm for much longer.
When out on the open road, it is not always easy to find a convenient place to take a break and get something to eat, so bringing a coolbox packed with food can be useful. This can ensure that you have plenty to eat, especially if you are caught in an unexpected traffic jam and allows you to make healthier choices with your diet than if you were relying on service station offerings.
It is essential that you keep your vehicle, yourself and your goods safe at all times, so it can be a good idea to invest in a robust lock. This can be attached to your doors to provide a level of defence against attack or thieves. A steering lock can also be extremely useful in preventing the truck from being stolen. Once in place, it is extremely difficult to remove without the key and can act as a highly visible deterrent.
You never know how much life your light bulbs have in them, so make sure you have a range of long-life bulbs in stock. This means you can change them if yours start to fade, to ensure you are fully visible in the dark.
